Kansas City Chiefs – Jacksonville Jaguars | Prediction, Odds & Tips
The Kansas City Chiefs found their quarterback of the future last season in reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes was able to get the Chiefs a game away from making the Super Bowl last season; can he take them all the way this season. But in Jacksonville, they will face a team that many believe has been a decent quarterback short of greatness the last few years.
However, Blake Bortles is gone, and they have Eagles Super Bowl hero Nick Foles running the offence.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Preview
A match-up like this is one that has the potential to be an epic battle if both teams can live up to their reputations. The Kansas City Chiefs became the premier offence in the NFL last season with the emergence of the eventual MVP, quarterback Patrick Mahomes. But he had the benefit last season of teams not knowing anything about him other than how he played in college.
This year will not be nearly as easy for him—starting with the season opener against one of the best defences in football last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last season, the Jaguars defence ranked fifth in points allowed with 19.8/game and second in passing defence with 195 yards/game allowed.
But beating the Jaguars defence will not be the only issue the Chiefs will face. With Nick Foles at quarterback, there is a reason to believe the Jacksonville offence is going to be much better this season.
Approaching this game, gamblers are going to have to decide who to believe in more—the Chiefs offence or the Jaguars defence. Let’s take a closer look at both teams.
Kansas City Chiefs News
Patrick Mahomes proved the Chiefs were right to trust him with the offence last season by rewarding the team with an MVP-season and a trip to the AFC Championship game. But they learned the hard way in the AFC title game that it doesn’t matter how good your offence is if your defence struggles too much to stop anyone.
So, if they were going to make a run once again in 2019, the Chiefs knew they had to address their defensive issues—and they did. Defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was let go, and former Giants defensive coordinator and head coach Steve Spagnuolo was brought in to turn the unit around.
He’ll have some new, young talent to work within defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, Frank Clark and linebacker Darron Lee. The Chiefs also added some depth to the unit in the draft and let go older players like Justin Houston and Eric Berry.
Whether the offence takes a step back, a step forward, or stays, the same will not matter if the defence can not improve from last season. But since they were ranked among the lowest in most statistical categories, that shouldn’t be too hard.
Jacksonville Jaguars News
Two years ago, with Blake Bortles playing good enough (i.e., making few mistakes), the Jaguar defence was able to get the team within a game of the Super Bowl. But then last year, the mistake-prone version of Bortles returned. With his struggles at quarterback and too many injuries at running back, the team fell back into the AFC cellar.
But this season, with the former Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl hero, Nick Foles, running the offence, there is reason for optimism in Jacksonville. The team has a bevy of talented receivers that have been dying for a quarterback that can get them the ball.
If Foles can do that, and Leonard Fournette can remain healthy for most of the season (if not all), the Jaguars offence could be tough to beat. Of course, the defence will have to remain the dominant unit it has been for the last few seasons.
While they did lose a couple of players off last year’s defence, the addition of guys like rookie linebacker Josh Allen should fill the void.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Head-to-Head
The Chiefs and Jaguars played once last season, a game that saw Blake Bortles throw for 430 yards but still lose the game, 30-14. Over the years, the two have played against each other on just 12 occasions with each team winning six. The Chiefs have won the last four (three of which were played in Kansas City), but are 2-4 against the Jaguars in Jacksonville.
Odds and Predictions
The Chiefs addressed some of their issues on defence by adding personnel, but they created some with some of the cuts they made. While it wasn’t surprising when they let defensive coordinator, Bob Sutton, go it remains to be seen if Steve Spagnuolo is going to be an upgrade.
Jacksonville, on the other hand, did a great job of addressing its primary deficiency at quarterback. Nick Foles should have no trouble breathing life into an offence that is stacked with talent at the skill positions.
This game will likely be one of the better ones of opening weekend. While the Kansas City offence is exciting, the Jaguar defence can stop anyone. Expect Nick Foles to give Jaguars fans something to cheer about as he leads the home team to victory.
Take Jacksonville (+150) to record the upset over Kansas City. If they don’t do it straight up, they will against the spread (+3.5). As for the over/under, in Week One, defence will rule the day. Take the under.
