Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers | Prediction, Odds & Tips
When the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers met back in Week 12, it was called a potential NFC Championship game preview. Fast forward a couple of months, and sure enough, they are indeed meeting in the NFC title game.
But can the Packers put up a fight this time, or will Green Bay get embarrassed by the 49ers once again?
Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers Preview
Rematches that occur during the same season will usually go one of two ways. The game will either be the mirror image of the first (and boring) or the exact opposite as the desire for redemption forces the losing team to raise its game.
With how easily the 49ers dominated their Week 12 matchup, the Packers are going to need to really up their game.
Aaron Rodgers had one of his worst days as a pro completing 20 of 3 passes for just 104 yards and one touchdown (and an average per attempt of only 3.2 yards—a new career-low). The offensive line struggled to give him time (he was sacked five times).
Aaron Jones struggled to find room to run, but as a team, the Packers ran the ball well (28 carries for 117 yards).
As for the 49ers offense, well—they didn’t have to do much. So, they didn’t. Jimmy Garoppolo completed 14 of 20 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. The run game was sufficient (22 carries for 112 yards), but nearly half (51) of the yardage was gained on three plays
While the score looked terrible, the Packers were not far from making it a competitive game. Had they tackled better and not given up so many big plays in the passing game, the score could have been a lot closer.
Of course, to win, the offense is going to have to produce this time and not let the 49ers defense run the show.
Green Bay Packers News
From a defensive perspective, if the Packers can eliminate the errors that led to San Francisco’s big plays and tackle better, they should be fine. But the bigger problem last time was the offensive side of the ball.
If you believe Davante Adams, the offense is going to do a much better job this time around, via ESPN:
“…obviously, the plan wasn’t good enough [last time]. That’s not a knock on Matt or anybody. The execution obviously wasn’t good enough, too, so those go hand in hand, though. The plan, so far, what I’ve seen, I really like, and I think it’s a better way to attack this defense.”
Last time, the offense generated just 198 total yards and eight points. So, it is safe to say it will not be hard for them to do better.
Getting right tackle Bryan Bulaga back on the offensive line should help.
San Francisco 49ers News
The 49ers know that they are going to get a better game from the Packers this time around. They also know where the Packers are going to attack—wherever cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon lines up.
He has given up all five passing touchdowns teams have scored against the 49ers in the last three games.
But while it would make sense to keep him on the bench and go with Emmanuel Mosley. However, the 49ers have yet to indicate who is going to get the start.
Of course, with their secondary concerns, the 49ers will likely go with the same style of offense as they did against the Vikings—run, run, and run some more. They had 47 total runs in that game and gained 186 yards and scored two touchdowns.
The best defense against a quarterback like Aaron Rogers is to keep him sidelined.
Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers Head-to-Head
The Packers and 49ers met once during the regular season back in Week 12, a game the 49ers won with ease, 37-8. Over the years, the two have met 68 times, including seven postseason games. Of those 68 games, the Packers won 36, the 49ers 31, and they tied once.
Green Bay also leads the playoff series, 4-3. San Francisco has won six of their last eight meetings with the Packers.
Odds and Predictions
This is going to be a much better game than it was the first time—but history doesn’t favor the Packers. In year’s past, there have been 23 occasions where teams that played in the regular season met in the playoffs. Of those 23, the team that lost the first time has only won nine times.
Does that mean the Packers are sunk? Not necessarily.
If the Green Bay defense can make a few tweaks, the game will be closer. If the offense can find a way to generate some yards against the 49ers defense, they will keep the game competitive.
But will they win?
The Packers may figure out how to jumpstart the offense and score some points, but unlikely. Take the 49ers to win (-355) over the Packers (+255), but for Green Bay to win against the spread (+7.5). As for the over/under (46.5)— defense is going to rule the day in this game. Take the under.
Fans of both teams may like the money line for either (Packers– +265; 49ers– -335) more at 888sport.
Our Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers Betting Tip:
Don’t trust how much either team will score, but the 49ers will win the game. However, they will not cover the spread.
