Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings | Prediction, Odds & Tips

The Monday Night Football season began in Week One with a double-header and will end this week with a classic matchup between two bitter rivals fighting for the division title and a better seed in the playoffs.

Green Bay currently controls the NFC North, but with a win, Minnesota can take some of that control away. But the Vikings couldn’t get the job done earlier in the season—so why should fans believe they can now?

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings Preview

The last time the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings met back in Week Two, the Vikings were still searching for an offensive identity, and the Packers were still working out their issues with Matt LaFleur’s new offence.

Fast forward to the second to last week of the season, and both have since found their offensive identity. However, the Packers seem to have lost it again the last three weeks following a devastating loss to the 49ers.

As for the Vikings, it is more of an injury-related issue with Dalvin Cook and alexander Mattison potentially out for the game.

Minnesota did a better job of adjusting last week and finding a way to win (by forcing seven turnovers). Green Bay has not adapted as well but has done enough to get the win.

Should both teams have issues on offence once again, the winner could be whoever does the best job of adjusting this week.

When you look at the record of the Green Bay Packers, it is easy to assume that it has been just another of the many great seasons the Packers have enjoyed under Aaron Rodgers. But that is not exactly the case.

The offence stumbled out of the gate as Rodgers, and new head coach Matt LaFleur worked the kinks out of the offensive attack. Luckily, their defence was able to pick up the slack, and they won their first three anyway.

But then things started to click as both sides of the ball played well for a while. However, then a few weeks ago, they had a chance to make a statement with a win over the San Francisco 49ers. But instead, they got clobbered.

Since then, things just haven’t worked right. They have won all three since the 49ers game, but they haven’t played well in the process. Luckily, they face soft opponents (Giants, Redskins, and Bears).

Because of those wins and the games they lost, Rodgers doesn’t think the Packers are respected by the other teams in the league, via ESPN:

“I don’t know that we have the full respect of the entire league at this point based on some of our performances where we got beat by a couple scores and kind of the reaction, I would assume, to those situations.”

The Vikings have leaned hard on the run for much of the season. But my be forced to rely more on the passing game due to injuries. Dalvin Cook left last week’s game against the Chargers with a shoulder injury, and his immediate backup, Alexander Mattinson, was already out and is listed as questionable this week with an ankle injury.

If neither can go in a must-win game, the Vikings will have to put their faith in the offensive line and reserve running backs Mike Boone and Ameer Abdullah. Either that or on the arm of Kirk Cousins.

On Monday, head coach Mike Zimmer didn’t have an update on Cook’s shoulder but sounded like he thinks Cook will be able to play through the injury. But he didn’t say that he would play, leaving room for doubt.

When asked if Cook could, he simply said, via Twitter: “Yeah, it feels good today.”

Cook ran for 154 yards earlier in the season against the Packers, so Green Bay will not mind at all if he ends up taking a seat.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings Head-to-Head

The Packers and Vikings have played 118 times (including two playoff games) dating back to their first meeting on 22nd October 1961. Green Bay leads the all-time series with a record of 61-54-3. While the Packers won their meeting earlier this season, 21-16, the Vikings won five of the last seven (and tied once).

Minnesota has not lost at home to Green Bay since the 2015 season.

Odds and Predictions

On paper, this one looks like the Vikings should walk away with it. They have a more productive offence and the stingier defence between them. When one team appears to be better on both sides of the ball, it is fair to assume they should win.

But not when the other team has Aaron Rodgers.

As long as Rodgers is in uniform, Green Bay has a chance. If they had played better over the last month, it would be easier to say they can win the game. But since they didn’t…

Minnesota is playing better all-around football right now than Green Bay is. Take the Vikings to win (-221), straight up and against the spread (-4.5). As for the over/under, between these two offences, 45 points should be easy to cover.

Those that think Minnesota may be able to cover the spread, head to Betway to get an extra .5 point.
