This edition of the MLB playoffs will be a lot different than usual. Just as it is in the AL, National League division winners, the runner up in each division, and the two next-best teams will earn playoff berths. The first round will be a best-of-three series while the remainder of the playoff schedule including the World Series will have a best-of-seven format. With just a few days left in the regular season, let’s examine the odds of winning the World Series for our remaining contenders.

MLB World Series Winners 2020: Best Bookmakers (National League)

    Los Angeles Dodgers +375

The cream of the crop that is the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers easily wrapped up the NL West despite having the upstart Padres keeping it close for most of the season. L.A. has been beating teams on the road as efficiently as they beat them at home. They have a very good pitching staff and an offense that averages 5.8 runs per game. The bookmakers had them set at +400 to win the World Series at the beginning of the season and they are giving them even more respect now.

    Atlanta Braves +1200

While Atlanta was certainly thought of as an AL East contender, not too many people thought they’d take the division so handily. Yet, here they are heading into the playoffs on a bit of a roll. A top-three seeding and home-field advantage will help their cause as they have been crushing it at home.

    Chicago Cubs +1400

The Cubbies have overcome some stiff competition in the NL Central and appear poised to clinch the division title. They already have their post-season ticket punched regardless. However, they haven’t been playing all that well of late especially where their offense is concerned. Those who bet them at +2200 before the season started have something to be excited about.

    San Diego Padres +1000

The Padres have tried and failed to put a competitive team on the field over the past couple of years. They continued that trend this season, but the bookies weren’t convinced as reflected in the +4000 pre-season odds to win the World Series. Low and behold, the Padres were a pleasant surprise and they are off to the post-season for the first time since 2006. They haven’t exactly finished strong, but they have put together some impressive winning streaks along the way.

    Cincinnati Reds +3500

While they haven’t clinched their post-season berth yet, the Reds would need a whole lot of things to go wrong to miss out. This team has turned it on at the right time and is one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. If you have faith in them, now’s the time to place your bets because the odds will inevitably decrease once they are officially in.

    St. Louis Cardinals +3500

Like Cincinnati, the Cardinals have yet to punch their ticket although it appears that they will. This another team that bookmakers overestimated when they set St. Louis’s opening World Series odds at +1400. The team hasn’t been too consistent at the plate or on the mound in recent weeks, but they have done enough to get this far.

    Miami Marlins +4000

You are probably beaming with joy if you placed a pre-season bet on the uber-long-shot Marlins to win the World Series at a whopping +100000. While they aren’t officially in yet, it looks really good for them as either a runner up or wild card. This team has surprised a lot of people. Now, you aren’t going to get them at +100000 anymore. Bookmakers currently have them listed at +4000. Unfortunately, they haven’t been lighting it up lately and a potential first-round series against Atlanta doesn’t bode well at all.

    Milwaukee Brewers +4000

They aren’t dead yet, but the Milwaukee Brewers are on life support despite making a late-season charge. Even at +4000, a bet on this team to win the World Series is money burned. They will be in over their heads in a series against the Dodgers.

    San Francisco Giants +5000

Like Milwaukee, the Giants’ playoff hopes are hanging by the thinnest of threads. This is actually a bit of a pleasant surprise considering bookmakers had them at +25000 entering the season. That would indicate that bookies had next to no expectations of this team. Having them at +5000 still doesn’t show a lot of faith in the Giants, but they have the oddsmakers’ attention. The funny thing is that the Giants held their own against the Dodgers who they would likely meet in the first round if they happened to slip in.

    Philadelphia Phillies +4000

In the closing days of the 2020 MLB season, Philly’s chances of extending their season is, well, not very good at all. But they are still breathing. It’s just too bad they picked such a terrible time to hit the skids. With pre-season odds set at +1800, it’s obvious this team has once again underachieved.
