Winnipeg Blue Bombers – Saskatchewan Roughriders | Prediction, Odds & Tips

Last week’s win over Edmonton was an odd one in that the Blue Bombers defence surrendered over 500 yards of offence while generating just 278 themselves—and only 89 through the air. But the defence held the Eskimos to seven field goals while the Bombers scored touchdowns.

But pulling off a game like that once is one thing; can they do it again this week against an excellent Roughriders team?

With Clint Streveler at pivot, fans were wondering how the offence would change or if it would. If last week is any indication, it is going to change a lot. Streveler attempted just 17 passes completing only seven for a meager 89 yards—but then he also ran the ball 14 times for 95 yards and a touchdown.

Despite being outgained by well over 200 yards, they lost the time of possession battle by only 3:18. This was against a very good Edmonton defence (first in net offensive yards allowed; fifth against the run and first against the pass).

This week will not be any easier for the Bombers because the Roughriders have the second-best defence against the run (80.6 yards/game allowed) and pass (223.3 yards/game allowed).

While it will be hard for Winnipeg to score, it will not be any easier for the Roughriders. They may try to pass a lot against the Bombers after seeing Trevor Harris throw for over 400 yards last week. But while Cody Fajardo is a decent passer, he is not a great one.

However, Saskatchewan may need him to be a better one since the Bombers have the No. 1 run defence.

Their win over Eskimos last week showed just how much the Bombers are going to need their defence and running game with Matt Nichols out for a few weeks. But the team may have to lean on the defence a little more this week with running back Andrew Harris suspended for the next two weeks.

The CFL announced earlier in the week that Harris had failed a drug test; under league policy, a first offence carries a two-game suspension.

After the league announced the suspension, Harris released a statement of his own blaming the result on a tainted product. But he also took responsibility for it and accepted the consequence (via CLF.ca):

“…I’m very sorry to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for this unexpected result, and I can’t wait to rejoin my teammates and the city of Winnipeg in our quest to bring a Grey Cup to this wonderful city that I am fortunate enough to call home. Thank you.”

Harris has won the last two rushing titles and is having another stellar season this year. The team will likely turn to Johnny Augustine in the backfield while Harris is out. He has carried the ball nine times this season for 60 yards and just 16 times throughout his short career.

The Roughriders will be taking a five-game winning streak into this week’s game against the Blue Bombers. Their approach to it will need to be somewhat straight-forward if last week’s Bombers’ game is any indication. They will have to stop the run and score some points to beat the Bombers.

Since the Roughriders happen to have one of the best defences in the league, it is not hard to imagine them stopping the Winnipeg offence. But the trick will be scoring enough points. Winnipeg may be tough against the run, but they are mediocre when it comes to defending against the pass.

However, while the Roughriders have a decent pass attack, it is not too prolific (fifth in the league; 256.9 yards/game). If they can get a great game out of their defence and a good one out of Fajardo, that may be enough to win.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders Head-to-Head

The Blue Bombers and Roughriders have not played yet this season. Saskatchewan won both of the back-to-back games (Weeks 12 and 13) last season. But they were shut out by the Bombers in Week 18 and lost in the Western Semi-Final game, 23-18.

From a historical perspective, the two have played 245 times during the regular season dating back to 1913. Of those games, Winnipeg won 135 and Saskatchewan won 106. Four of them ended in a tie. They have faced each other 27 times in the postseason with each team winning 13 games (one ended in a tie).

The two have also met in the Grey Cup once—which the Roughriders won.

Odds and Predictions

Predicting this one is tougher than it should be. While the Bombers offence is way too one-dimensional now, they still managed to beat an excellent Edmonton team last week. What’s to say they can’t do it again?

While the Bombers defence did enough last week, it would be unrealistic to expect another such performance this week.  Fajardo isn’t great, but he is good and so is the Roughriders defence.

Take Saskatchewan to win (-225), straight up but not against the spread (-5.5). While the Blue Bombers are in rough shape, they are a scrappy, resilient lot that will find a way to keep it close. As for the over/under—take the under. This game is going to be a defensive battle.
