Tennessee Titans @ Baltimore Ravens | Prediction, Odds & Tips

The ascension to greatness for Lamar Jackson this season is expected to culminate with a starring role in the Super Bowl. But if the Ravens overlook the scrappy Tennessee Titans, they could find themselves attending the NFL Awards rather than getting ready for the big game in a few weeks.

For that to happen, the Titans may need to play the game of their lives and hope Lamar Jackson doesn’t.

Tennessee Titans @ Baltimore Ravens Preview

In a league that gears its rules towards the passing game and tries to promote throwing the ball, it is interesting that two of the top-three run games will be facing off in one of the divisional round games this season (Ravens—1st; Titans—3rd).

Both will undoubtedly look to lean on their run games this weekend. Not only because it is how their offence works best, but because they want to keep the other’s offence off the field as much as possible. The less they have to worry about tackling Derek Henry or Lamar Jackson, the better.

The importance of tackling and difficulty is not lost on Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey via SI.com:

“I really think it’s going to take all 11. (Henry) is (big), and he has really elite speed also. He can run people over here and there all the time, but he also has the speed that if he gets to the edge, he can really outrun you.”

The same can be said for the Titans. Defensive coordinator Den Pees had this to say about tackling Jackson:

“He’s hard enough to tackle, even if we know where he is and where he’s going to be. I’ve seen guys have him defended absolutely perfect, and he makes them miss….”

As cliché as it sounds, the Titans know they have a chance to do something special this season. With a win against the Ravens, they can become just the third team (since realignment in 2002) with fewer than ten regular-season wins to make a conference championship game.

Of course, to do so, they have to beat the Baltimore Ravens, and the enormity of the task is not lost on anyone via SI.com:

“Every week we know it’s a bigger challenge,” center Ben Jones said after the win over the Patriots. “We have to go to another great team next week and take care of business on the road again. [The Baltimore Ravens] have a great team. They have done it week-in and week-out, but we have to go up there and take care of business next week.”

Getting Derek Henry and Ryan Tannehill on track early in the game will be important. But nothing they do on offence will matter if the Titans can’t figure out how to slow down Lamar Jackson. The team is hopeful that inside linebacker Jayon Brown will be able to play and help out to that end.

He was lost early in the Patriots game with a shoulder injury and has yet to practice this week. The availability of defensive back Adoree Jackson (foot) remains to be seen this week.

Baltimore Ravens News

For the Ravens, the key to winning this week is pretty clear—they have to tackle Derek Henry. They can’t let the Titans big running back find his groove early on as he did against the Patriots last weekend. But they seem to think they know what the problem was last weekend.

They also appear to think they know how to solve it.

“Guys didn’t seem like they were too interested in tackling him,” Earl Thomas said Tuesday via SI.com. “So, I think our mindset is a little different. We’re going to try to tackle him. Try to swarm. And we’re going to see how it plays out.”

On paper, the Ravens appear to have a good run defence (93.4 yards/game allowed). But that number is due in part to teams having to pass after falling behind. The offence will certainly try to do its part by keeping Henry off the field.

However, to that end, it may be easier said than done if Mark Ingram’s calf gives him too much trouble. Gus Edwards, his backup, has filled in admirably at times this season and could do so this week if necessary.

Tennessee Titans @ Baltimore Ravens Head-to-Head

The Titans and Ravens have not played this season; the last time they did play was back in Week Six of the 2018 season, a game the Ravens won 21-0. Since their first game back in 1996, the Titans and Ravens have played 23 times (including three playoff games), with the Ravens winning 12 and the Titans 11.

Of the three playoff games, the Ravens are 2-1, including the last one, a 13-10 win in the 2009 AFC Divisional Round.

Odds and Predictions

How well either runs the ball is going to dictate how this game goes. Both will try to establish a passing game, but the key to winning is going to be the run game—and that favors the Ravens. The Titans defence has faced and done well against other running quarterbacks, but no one is quite like Jackson.

They may be able to slow him down, but they will not stop him. At the same time, the Ravens will not stop Henry, either.

Tennessee will have enough success on offence to keep the game interesting, but not to win.  Take Baltimore to win (-399) but take the Titans (+325) to win against the spread (+9.0).

As for the over/under (47.0), it is not hard to see the over being covered. But with the run game ruling the day for both teams, take the under.

Titans fans can get another half point (+9.5) at bet365.  Those who think the score could be on the high side, the point total at 888sport is a little lower (46.5).
