Seattle Seahawks @ Philadelphia Eagles | Prediction, Odds & Tips

If you look at the records, the Seattle Seahawks should have no trouble getting a win in their Wild Card game against the Eagles in Philadelphia Sunday. But with the injuries at the running back position towards the end of the regular season, the Seahawks are certainly vulnerable.

But the Eagles had to make a run against some bad teams down the stretch to get in. They also needed the Dallas Cowboys to implode (which they did)—and barely made it in. So, maybe the Seahawks are not in bad shape after all?

Seattle Seahawks @ Philadelphia Eagles Preview

Back when these two played in Week 12, it was the Eagles that were missing a running game and the Seahawks that ran for close to 200 yards with their talented backfield. But back then, the Eagles were starting to realize they had a real weapon in rookie Miles Sanders.

In that game, Sanders had 12 carries for 63 yards; between him, Carson Wentz, and Jay Ajayi, the Eagles ran for 106 yards. But since then, as they gave Sanders (who deserves ROY consideration) more touches and Boston Scott emerged as a change of pace guy, the Eagles have had one of the better run games in the league.

During their four-game winning streak, they had at least 118 yards on the ground in each game.

Seattle, on the other hand, has seen their running game go from a consistent driving force (third best in the league; 137.5 yards/game) to a big question mark. Towards the end of the regular season, they lost Rashaad Penny and Chris Carson to injuries.

To fill the void, the Seahawks had no choice but to insert a rookie and hope that Marshawn Lynch was in game shape even though he had not played in a year. But the duo, along with Russell Wilson, gained 125 yards against the 49ers in the regular-season finale.

Seattle Seahawks News

The Seahawks have every right to feel cheated by the NFL heading into Wild Card weekend. Had a blatant pass interference been called against the 49ers in their regular-season finale, they would have likely won that game, won the division, and earned a bye this week with a home game in the divisional round.

Instead, they are playing this week on the road. But playing on the road is not something the Seahawks worry about according to Russell Wilson, via ESPN:

“Some teams worry about playing on the road. I don’t think we do.”

They won seven of eight road games this season, including their Week 12 game in Philadelphia. However, in that game, they had Rashaad Penny and Chris Carson paving the way with 155 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Their running game will now rely on little-used rookie Travis Homer and Marshawn Lynch.

Homer ran for 62 yards on ten carries last week against the 49ers. Lynch, playing in his first game in over a year, had 34 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Philadelphia Eagles News

For the Eagles, the ‘playoffs’ started a month ago when they were 5-7 and couldn’t lose again if they were going to have a shot at making the playoffs. They ended up running the table and winning the division.

“The last month, they have been playoff-type games for us,” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said, via ESPN. “This team is battle-tested that way, and we prepare that way.”

However, the Eagles should take note of who they had to beat to win the division. They had to beat a terrible Giants team (twice) and even worse Redskins team. Then the Cowboys had to implode (and they did) to open the door for them.

They did win, but the Giants should have won the first game, the Redskins had a chance to win, and as bad as the Cowboys played, they still had a shot in their game.

But therein lies the joy of the postseason. It doesn’t matter how you got there, just that you did.

Seattle Seahawks @ Philadelphia Eagles Head-to-Head

The Eagles and Seahawks last played back in Week 12 of this season, a game that Seattle won 17-9. They have played a total of 17 games all-time since playing for the first time back in 1976. Of those 17 games, the Seahawks have won ten and the Eagles seven.

Seattle has won the last five meetings, seven of the previous eight, along with the last five times they visited Philadelphia. The Seahawks and Eagles have never played during the postseason.

Odds and Predictions

Many seem to think the Seahawks are going to suffer without a dependable running game. Since Carson Wentz managed to pull out some clutch wins down the stretch, he’ll keep doing so in the playoffs—despite all of the injuries the Eagles have endured.

That could not be further from reality.

Seattle’s run game is good enough, but even if it isn’t, Russell Wilson will figure out how to guide the team to a win over a lackluster, injured Eagles team.

Take the Seahawks (-136) to win over the Eagles (+112), straight up and against the spread (-2.0). As for the over/under (45.5) — don’t count on the Eagles to do much.  The Seahawks are unlikely to run up the score. Take the under.

Seattle supporters will like the spread over at Bet365 a little better (-1.5).
