San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs | Prediction, Odds & Tips
Despite their regular season and postseason success, many doubted the Kansas City Chiefs were going to make it past Derek Henry and the Titans in the AFC Championship—but they did. After dispatching the Green Bay Packers with ease during the regular season, few doubted whether the San Francisco 49ers could do it again—which they did.
Now the two will meet in Miami to decide who will Super Bowl LIV.
San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs Preview
In a perfect world, the final game of the NFL season will be the best game of the season. There is an excellent chance that Super Bowl LIV will be just that.
On the one hand, you have the unstoppable Patrick Mahomes and the offence of the Kansas City Chiefs. During the regular season, the only thing that ever seemed to stop them was themselves—too many mistakes.
But in the postseason, they have cut out those mistakes and dominated the competition. However, they have gotten off to slow starts twice (and double-digit deficits), which plays right into the hands of the San Francisco 49ers and their defence.
Mounting a comeback against the Texans and Titans defence is one thing. But mounting one against arguably the best defence in the league this year is not going to be nearly as easy.
This could be especially true if the 49ers can get the run game on track—and Mahomes off the field.
San Francisco 49ers News
On paper, this game looks like one the 49ers could potentially control. Kansas City will look to throw the ball a lot—but they have the No. 1 pass defence in the league. They have given up 211 yards a game during postseason play. But during the regular season just 169.2.
Should the defence limit Patrick Mahomes in the passing game, it will then be up to the run game to control the ball on offence. During the regular season, they were second in the league with 144.1 yards rushing/game.
But through two postseason games, they are averaging 235.5 yards/game.
While the Chiefs run defence was not great during the regular season, they have performed well in the playoffs. Should they continue to do so against the 49ers, there is some concern over whether Jimmy Garoppolo can get the job done in the passing game.
Kansas City Chiefs News
The best way to beat the Chiefs offence is to keep it off the field. With the way the Titans were running the ball, many believed that Tennessee had a chance at recording the upset in the AFC Championship.
But then the Chiefs beat the Titans at their own game running for 112 yards—56 of it coming from Patrick Mahomes including 27 on a touchdown run late in the first half, via ESPN:
“They were doubling all these guys. I just ran it and got some good blocking at the end and found a way to get in the end zone.”
The run threat kept the Titans defence from being able to focus too much on the Chiefs passing game—which only made it easier for the Chiefs to succeed in it.
Of course, having similar success against the 49ers defence is going to be much harder to come by. That will make it that much more important the defence has as much success stopping the 49ers run game as they did regular season rushing champ, Derek Henry (Henry gained only 69 yards on the ground).
San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs Head-to-Head
The Chiefs and 49ers did not play during the regular season this year. The last time they did play was early in the 2018 season, a game the Chiefs won 38-27. Since the two first played back in 1971, they have faced off 13 times. The 49ers lead the series, 7-6.
But the Chiefs have won three of the last four.
Odds and Predictions
This game could easily go one of two ways: (1) Patrick Mahomes will be too much for the 49ers defence and the Chiefs will dominate the game, or (2) Raheem Mostert and the 49ers run game keep Patrick Mahomes on the sideline, and the 49ers run their way to a low-scoring, three-point win.
This is a tough one to call—49ers (+107) over the Chiefs (-127), straight up and ATS (+1.5). As or the over/under (54.5), with the 49ers run game leading the way, take the under.
Our San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs Betting Tip:
Either team could win this game, but don’t expect the score to be anything crazy. Take the under.
