Ottawa Redblacks – Saskatchewan Roughriders | Prediction, Odds & Tips
The Roughriders were expected to fall flat on their faces after losing Zach Collaros, but Cody Fajardo has proven more than capable of leading the team. With a win over Ottawa, they can move into sole possession of third place in the West division (they are currently tied with the idle Calgary Stampeders).
Can they keep the good times rolling at home against Ottawa or will the Redblacks put it all together and score the upset?
Ottawa Redblacks vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders Preview
When these two teams last met back in Week Two, it wasn’t looking good for the Roughriders. They had lost their season opener and, more importantly, lost their starting pivot for the next six weeks. The Redblacks, on the other hand, were coming off a big win over the defending champions.
Ottawa pivot Dominique Davis went on to have a career day against the Roughriders in a 44-41 Ottawa win. But new Roughriders pivot Cody Fajardo played well giving fans hope for the future.
Fast forward to Week 11 and the job is now Fajardo’s for good, and the Roughriders are 5-3. Ottawa has struggled to a 3-6 record behind the inconsistent and ineffective play of Davis. If they are going to have a chance at beating Saskatchewan, the Redblacks need to put a lot of pressure on Fajardo. Davis will need to have a good game as well.
That may be easier said than done, though. The Roughriders have given up the second-fewest sacks this season (12) while BC has made the second-fewest sacks (10).
Ottawa Redblacks News
After starting the season off with 32 points in the season opener and 44 points in Week Two, the Redblacks offence has struggled mightily. Since Week Two, the offence recorded 30 points once but has otherwise failed to score 20 (including a one-point game).
After recording just seven points in last week’s loss to Hamilton head coach Rick Campbell decided it was time for a change and reshuffled his offensive coaching staff, via Canoe.com:
“We need to change things up. We have a lot of hard workers and good people trying to do the right things, but we need to inject a different energy into it. I didn’t think we were showing enough progress fast enough…. We need to be better on special teams and on defence, but the biggest issue right now is our lack of scoring — particularly touchdowns.”
Joe PaoPao will take over the offensive play-calling duties going forward and take over as quarterbacks coach. But the staff as a whole will still collaborate to create the game plan for the week.
Saskatchewan Roughriders News
Fans that have been wondering how far Cody Fajardo has come as a starting quarterback will get a chance to gauge how much he has improved when the team takes on the Redblacks this weekend. He faced the Redblacks in his first start back in Week Two.
While he played well, overall (360 yards and two touchdowns), the Roughriders ended up losing the game by three, 44-41. He has since performed well enough that the team felt safe with trading Zach Collaros away.
But if the team is going to get the win this time, they are going to need the defence to pick up its game. Since the loss to Ottawa, the defence has played a lot better. They are currently ranked fourth in points allowed (22.9) and second in net offence allowed (278.9 yards per game).
The Roughriders are hopeful that kicker Brett Lauther (who has been out since Week Three) may be able to return, but it is looking iffy at best.
“There have also been a couple of other things, and it has just been a whirlwind all at once,” Lauther said after a recent practice, via TheGraphicLeader.com. “I’m just hoping to put it all behind me for now and go for it from here.”
He practiced for the first time since his injury on Tuesday.
Ottawa Redblacks vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders Head-to-Head
The Redblacks and Roughriders played once earlier this season in Week Two, a game the Redblacks won 44-41. From a historical perspective, the Roughriders and Redblacks have played ten times since 2014. Of those games, the Roughriders have won seven and the Redblacks three.
Odds and Predictions
When these two teams last met, they appeared to be heading in the same direction—up. But while the Roughriders defence and QB play has improved, the Redblacks have gone in the opposite direction.
Shuffling around the offensive coaching staff should have some kind of impact on the Redblacks offence, but it is doubtful there will be enough of one this week to make a difference.
Take the Roughriders to win (-450), straight up and against the spread (-10). As for the over/under (49.5), don’t bank on the Redblacks providing too many points. Go with the under.
Our Ottawa Redblacks @ Saskatchewan Roughriders Betting Tip:
The Roughriders are going to win this game. While they combined for 80+ points last time, don’t bank o this game being as high scoring. Take the under.
