New England Patriots @ Houston Texans | Prediction, Odds & Tips

The New England Patriots are not the dominant force this season that they have been in recent years. But they proved last week against the Dallas Cowboys that they still know how to find a way to win. With their defense and Tom Brady running the offense still, they are going to be tough to beat.

But the Houston Texans have an offense with the potential to put some points up on the Patriots. However, their defense is going to find it hard to get Tom Brady off the field.

New England Patriots @ Houston Texans Preview

With a big win over the Indianapolis Colts last week, the Texans have the inside track to the AFC South crown. But to keep that advantage they really need to do something they have only done once before—beat the Patriots.

Bill O’Brien has tried to beat his former boss five times and has lost all five times. But if there was ever a moment where the advantage may be on his side, this is it.

Defensively, the Patriots are better than ever; the best in the league. But on offense, they are not moving the ball and scoring points like they have been known to do in recent years. So, if Houston can find a few cracks in the New England defense, the Texans could score an epic upset.

However, no one has really been able to crack the Patriots defense—except for Lamar Jackson. But it is unlikely the Texans try to run Deshaun Watson much due to his injury history.

On the offensive end, the Patriots have not looked good and are decimated at wide receiver right now. But the Texans defense has struggled against the pass this year, so this could be the breakout game Tom Brady has been waiting for.

The Patriots knew they were going to have a tough test on their hands last week against the Dallas Cowboys. But they just did what they have done countless times over the years—they played sound, fundamental football and waited for the Cowboys to make a mistake.

Dallas was, of course, happy to oblige.  The Patriots took advantage of those mistakes and put some points on the board leading to an eventual victory.

Forcing turnovers is something the Patriots have excelled at this season with 29 on the year. The Texans are tied for 14th in the league in turnovers with 14 (eight interceptions and six fumbles). So, opportunity could certainly be there for the Patriots.

Houston Texans News

New England may be one of the top two defenses in the NFL this season, but the Houston offense is no joke either. They enter the game ranked seventh in total yards, sixth in the run game an 12th in the passing game.

However, against a Patriots defense allowing 158.0 yards passing a game, the Texans could struggle to move the ball. They will likely try to establish the run game in hopes of opening up the passing lanes a little. But New England is allowing less than 100 yards a game on the ground.

So, that will be easier said than done.

But the key for the Texans will not be on the offensive side, but the defensive. If they can keep Tom Brady from taking over the game, they can keep it close. As long as the game is close, they will have a shot at winning and pulling off a crucial upset.

New England Patriots @ Houston Texans Head-to-Head

The Texans and Patriots last played in Week One of the 2018 season, a game the Patriots won 27-20. In the short history between the two teams, they have faced off 11 times, nine regular season games and two playoff ones. New England has dominated the series winning ten of those 11 games.

Houston’s only win was back in Week 17 of the 2009 season, 34-27.

Odds and Predictions

Houston’s best hope is going to lie in keeping the game close and then hoping DeAndre Hopkinsor Will Fuller can break a play open late in the game to give them the chance to pull ahead. With Stephen Gillmore likely shadowing Hopkins, that will be easier said than done.

Fuller is capable, but there is the ever-present danger of him dropping the ball to worry about.

For once, this is a game that Houston has a real chance of winning. New England is not going to score a lot. But the problem may be Houston not being able to score enough themselves.

This game is going to be a battle of attrition on the defensive side of the ball. Whoever slips up first will lose. More than likely, that will be the Texans.

Take New England to win (-170), straight up but only by a field goal. So, take Houston against the spread (+4.5). As for the over/under (45.0)—absolutely take the under in this one.
