Montreal Alouettes – Calgary Stampeders | Prediction, Odds & Tips
This week’s game could end up being a big one for the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders. There is a chance that both could get their starting pivots back. Montreal’s Vernon Adams has returned to practice as has Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell. But neither team has announced who their starting quarterback is going to be.
What could really make this game interesting is if Adams returns and Mitchell does not.
Montreal Alouettes vs. Calgary Stampeders Preview
After a slow start to the season, the Stampeders are now in second in the West Division behind the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who they faced last week and lost to by two-points. Back-up pivot Nick Arbuckle had another decent game completing 62.9 percent of his passes for 260 yards and a touchdown (he also had a pair of interceptions).
But they couldn’t run against the Blue Bombers, and their defence had no answer for Matt Nichols. However, this week, the defence should be more competitive whether Vernon Adams starts, or Antonio Pipkin does.
At the same time, while Montreal’s defence is not statistically impressive, they have turned in a few really good performances this season.
Adams led the Alouettes on a three-game winning streak (their only wins) earlier this season. An injury kept him from making it four. However, while Adams deserves a lot of credit for the win streak, he didn’t do it all alone. The defence played exceptionally well during that stretch as did running back William Stanback.
Both Adams and Stanback were out in last week’s loss to the Roughriders.
Montreal Alouettes News
How competitive the Alouettes will be in this game will depend entirely on who starts the game at pivot. Pipkin has not played well since replacing Adams and was benched last week before the game was called due to weather.
Matt Schiltz replaced him but didn’t fare any better.
Adams, on the other hand, appeared to find his groove earlier in the season when he led the team on a three-game winning streak. A concussion knocked him out of Week Eight’s game against Ottawa and forced him to miss last week’s contest against the Roughriders.
He has returned to practice and has worked with the first team, but there has been no word on whether he will start.
Whoever starts will be without the services of the team’s leading receiver, B.J. Cunningham. But DeVier Posey, who has also been activated from the injured list, could help pick up the slack.
Calgary Stampeders News
Calgary fans got some good news this week as well with the return of Bo Levi Mitchell and running backs Don Jackson and Ka’Deem Carey to practice. However, while it sounds like there is a good chance Adams could return this week, there is no reason to be optimistic about Mitchell returning just yet.
While he did practice and take reps with the first team, Nick Arbuckle still took the majority of the reps with the first squad. However, the Stampeders may be just fine without Mitchell coming back.
Since Mitchell has been on the six-game injured list following an injury to his throwing arm against the Lions in Week Three, Arbuckle has played well. The team has gone 4-2 with Arbuckle under center and has moved into second in the ultra-competitive West Division.
Arbuckle even led the team on an improbable comeback back in Week Three after Mitchell went down.
Defensive co-captain Jamar Wall said it best after a recent practice when asked about Mitchell’s pending return, via Stampeders.com:
“Nick has been amazing for us. That comeback win, then taking over the reins from a guy that’s accomplished pretty much everything in this league, has proven just how good he really is. But everyone fears 19 [Mitchell].”
Montreal Alouettes vs. Calgary Stampeders Head-to-Head
The Alouettes and Stampeders have yet to play this season. But from a historical perspective, the two teams have faced off 78 times since 1946 with Calgary winning 41 and Montreal taking 36. They had one game end in a tie.
Calgary is 3-1 against Montreal in the last two seasons.
Odds and Predictions
Without a better idea of who is going to be healthy and playing, this one becomes a little more challenging to predict. If both teams are at full strength—Calgary wins. They have a better defence, a more experienced pivot, and more talent at the skill positions.
It Adams does not play, take Calgary (-300), straight up and ATS (-7.5). However, if Adams and Stanback are active, still take Calgary to win but take Montreal to win ATS. If it is Adams vs. Arbuckle, still take Calgary to win and Montreal ATS.
As for the over/under (51.5)—if Adams plays, take the over. If Antonio Pipkin starts, do not expect him to do well against Calgary’s defence (take the under).
