Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots | Prediction, Odds & Tips

Since the moment the AFC Championship game ended last season, fans of the Kansas City Chiefs have looked forward to a chance to exact some revenge on the Patriots. They will have it this week, but not under the circumstances they expected the rematch to be under.

Instead of playing for control of the No. 1 seed in the AFC, both teams are just looking to get things right before the postseason begins.

The Chiefs and Patriots expected to enter this game ready to battle over control of the No. 1 seed in the AFC. But instead, both are just hoping to get everything on track and working before the playoffs start.

New England has one of the best defences in recent history. But have been experiencing some struggles on offence. Critics have been quick to say it is all Tom Brady’s fault, but the lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball is the real culprit.

As for Kansas City, the passing game is as potent as ever, but they have struggled hard to run the ball this season. Against the Patriots, Andy Reid will likely be content with letting his superstar quarterback win the game for them.

It will not be easy for Patrick Mahomes against the New England secondary, but with the Patriots offensive issues, he may not need to do too much. Then again, the Patriots defence has given up 2+ touchdowns in only two games this season.

Kansas City Chiefs News

The Chiefs entered the season looking to bulldoze anyone that got in their way, much like they did last year. At first, it looked like that plan was going to work, but then teams started to figure the Chiefs out.

First, it was the Colts followed a week later by the Texans. Only one of their losses came when Patrick Mahomes was injured (vs. the Packers). The last came against the Ryan Tannehill-led Titans.

They may not be the No. 1 offence in the league this season, but they are still in the top four in scoring, passing, and total yards.

Injuries have certainly made it challenging to get the run game going. With Damien Williams and Darrel Williams injured, the team brought Spencer Ware back. Darwin Thompson and LeSean McCoy will carry the bulk of the load, though.

Defensively, they are not near the bottom of every category like they were last year. But the unit still struggles against the run and with overall consistency.

By the way, the media and many fans talk about the Patriots, you would not think they had a 10-2 record or were currently the No. 2 seed in the AFC. But following their surprising loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football last week, much of the talk has been negative.

Much of the talk has centered on the supposed decline of Tom Brady. While he will not have as many touchdowns this season (barring an explosion over the final four games), he will have fewer interceptions and roughly the same yardage as last season.

Brady is actually producing at a comparable rate to last year despite the utter lack of talent the team has at wide receiver and tight end this year. The run game, however, is producing just 96 yards a game this season; last year, it averaged around 127.

With the defence playing at a historic pace, the disparity in talent between the offence and defence has been drastic this season. That has likely led to much of the criticism of Brady and the offence. But they are averaging just .5 points less than last season.

Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots Head-to-Head

The Chiefs and Patriots have a rather extensive history for two teams that don’t share a division. Since their first meeting back in 1960(as the Dallas Texans and Boston Patriots), they have played 37 times, including two playoff games.

Kansas City leads the all-time series 18-16-3. But the Patriots have won eight of the last 11, including last year’s epic meeting in the AFC Championship, 37-31.

Odds and Predictions

If it weren’t for how the game against the Texans played out last week, this game would be a lot easier to predict. But since Houston’s weak defence was able to limit the Patriots offence, maybe there is hope for the Chiefs to do the same.

But after losing last weekend, the Patriots are likely going to get back to basics this week. Patrick Mahomes can’t lead touchdown drives if he isn’t on the field. With the Chiefs still struggling against the run, look for a heavy dose of James White, Sony Michel, and Rex Burkhead.

With the run game keeping the ball away from Mahomes and the defence making life hard on him, New England will win this one (-165), against the spread (-3.0) and straight up. As for the over/under (48.5), take the under. New England will not score much or allow Kansas City to, either.

If you are confident about the under, you may want to take the 49.0 points offered by bet365. Patriots fans may like the money line over at SportsInteraction.com (-159).
