Edmonton Eskimos – Calgary Stampeders | Prediction, Odds & Tips

Trevor Harris did all he could last week to lead the Eskimos past the Blue Bombers throwing for 400+ yards only to fall short in the end. Calgary had the week off, but when they last played in Week 10, they lost in overtime to the Montreal Alouettes.

Both teams would love a little redemption to get back to winning games again, but only one can actually do so. Who will it be?

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Calgary Stampeders Preview

A big focus for the Eskimos in Monday’s game is undoubtedly going to be finishing drives and getting into the endzone rather than settling for field goals. Doing so has cost the team games this season and has kept others closer than they needed to be.

But finishing drives wasn’t exactly the problem for the Eskimos when these two met a few weeks ago. They managed to get in the end zone twice in the second half and attempted two field goals (making one). The problem in that game was their nonexistent offense in the first half (78 total yards and one first down on six drives).

Edmonton’s defense didn’t do a bad job against Calgary holding them to just 244 total yards in that game. Nick Arbuckle was held to less than 200 yards passing. It was the usually very productive offense that failed.

But in the end, the Eskimos still generated over 400 yards of offense and had a shot at winning it in the end.

We didn’t play well enough to win,” head coach Jason Maas said after the game. “We’ve got to learn from this loss. The hope is that it makes us a better football club.

Calgary will need to keep the Eskimos offense from getting rolling again if it can. Their best shot to win will be in keeping the game close within a touchdown. Nick Arbuckle has done a good job since taking over for the injured Bo Levi Mitchell, but it remains to be seen if he can play catch-up if the Stampeders get too far behind.

The problem for the Eskimos is simple—they have to score touchdowns. Trevor Harris threw for over 400 yards against the Blue Bombers last week but only had a single touchdown. The team was forced to settle for seven field-goals (and was 0-3 in the red zone) in what ended up being a 34-28 defeat.

It wasn’t the first time settling for field goals cost them. Back in Week Six against Montreal, they had five drives end in field goal attempts (but only made three in what ended up being a 20-10 loss). In their Week Three loss to Winnipeg, they had to settle for seven field goals and went on to lose 28-21.

On Monday, Trevor Harris talked about the team’s issues with getting into the end zone, via SooToday.com:

“…We move the ball better than anybody in the league. We’re averaging however many yards we are (439 yards per game), we’re moving the ball, we just got to finish drives, and that’s the thing that’s frustrating: the small things that are happening to stall us, but we’re going to get it fixed, I can guarantee you that.”

Edmonton needs a win to stay in front of Calgary in the standings, but the team hasn’t won on Labour Day since the 2011 season.

CALGARY STAMPEDERSCalgary Stampeders News

Calgary was hoping to get Bo Levi Mitchell back for the game against Montreal back in Week 10. But the team did not think he was ready to return and ended up placing him back on the six-game IR. Head coach Dave Dickenson had this to say when the news was announced, via Stampeders.com:

“Unfortunately, with Bo, we’re just going to have to put him back on the shelf and see what happens as the season goes on. I’m just going to quit putting a time schedule in it, let him try and find the right balance.”

That meant putting the game back in the hands of Nick Arbuckle who was coming off an injury himself. He went on to have one of his best days as a pro against the Alouettes (370 yards, four touchdowns, 86.1 completion percentage) in a losing effort.

The Stampeders will need him to have a similar day against the Eskimos Monday afternoon. But it will not be easy to throw for nearly 400 yards against a defense allowing less than 200 yards a game (183.4).

They have played during the playoffs 27 times with Edmonton winning 14 of them and Edmonton 13.

Odds and Predictions

Calgary benefitted from the Eskimos having an incredibly bad first half on offense in their first meeting. It is highly doubtful that the Eskimos will have another such half in this game. While the Stampeders defense is good enough to slow Trevor Harris down a little, they can’t stop him.

Expect Harris to have a good day and for the Edmonton defense to make life hard on Nick Arbuckle.

Take Edmonton to win (+145), straight up and against the spread (+3.5). As for the over/under (48.5)—neither offense can be trusted to score a lot. Take the under.
